The Asheville Crowne Plaza® Hotel is situated on property with rich history, dating back to the Civil War.
During the 1800’s, Colonel George Wesley Clayton’s family owned a large portion of the property which now encompasses the hotel. It was Colonel Clayton that led over 400 Confederate soldiers to victory in the “Battle of Asheville” on April 6, 1865. The battle took place three days before the surrender and end of the war.

Colonel Clayton passed away on February 22, 1898 and was buried in the family cemetery which still exists on the Crowne Plaza’s property. (A re-dedication of the grave site in May 2010 honored his memory, where re-enactment soldiers gave a eulogy and honored the Colonel with full honors.)

The land served as a West Asheville neighborhood until the 1970’s, when Mr. Wayne Kinser had a vision of building a hotel and hotel a mile from downtown, Asheville. Over a few years, Mr. Kinser successfully purchased all nearly 125 acres from individual home and land owners, and opened a hotel in 1974.

In 2004, Hulsing Hotels saw the vision for the property and purchased the Kinser property. In 2005, the hotel re-opened under the Intercontinental Hotel Group’s Crowne Plaza® brand, and today has become Asheville’s destination hotel. With the addition of the Asheville Racquet Club in 2009, the hotel has become host to many local, regional, and national tennis tournaments with its 20 indoor and outdoor tennis courts.

The 8,500 square foot fitness and wellness center opened in October 2010, offering spin classes, aerobics and fitness classes, and childcare.

The Asheville Crowne Plaza® Hotel is now home to Asheville Zipline Canopy Adventures, Asheville Treetops Adventure Park, Kolo Bike Park, Asheville Racquet Club, and a 9-hole par 34 golf course with plans of expanding activities in the future.
