New Multi-use Sports Complex at Crowne Plaza Resort Asheville

Phase One

After several months of construction, the first phase of the new “recreational amenities” at the Crowne Plaza Tennis and Golf Resort will be complete within the month of October. Situated adjacent to the resort and located north of I-240 and only one mile from downtown Asheville, this complex will be a full-service, multi-sport and wellness center. Phase One includes rehabilitation of the existing four clay tennis courts (including lighting of two), six new “Hydro” clay courts (all with exceptional views) and four new indoor hard courts with new bathrooms, shower and locker facilities. A driving range is also being added along with the relocation of the Resort‘s Pro shop and Apparel Store from the hotel to the Tennis and Recreation facility.

Phase Two

As a part of the growth and renovation, Phase Two of the project will be a total re-design of the Resort‘s golf course. Extensive renovations began earlier in the year for the course to become a 9-hole Championship Golf Course complete with new Bermuda seeded fairways, irrigation system, new cart paths and new elevated Bermuda tee boxes by Spring of 2009. “The Course Doctors”, known for their work on Fazio courses have been over the project. A two-mile jogging/hiking and biking trail with varied terrain and a large outdoor pool with a covered pavilion will also be added on the property.

Phase Three

Phase Three will add a new 35,000 square foot building which will connect the Indoor Tennis facility to a large state of the art Fitness Center which will include such amenities as a full service Spa and Salon, an aerobics room, spinning room, childcare, lap pool, and a Café & Smoothie Bar with seating overlooking the indoor tennis courts. A new indoor soccer center will also be added with completion by the Summer of 2009.

From the Owner

“What was once a popular Tennis facility years ago will be again, but so much more”, stated Dennis Hulsing of Hulsing Hotels, Inc. who owns the 125-acre resort. “The downtown area has a huge demand for a facility like ours. There are currently no other sports facilities in Western North Carolina that encompass a total sports experience. If you live anywhere in Asheville, this facility will appeal to you and your family. Memberships will be available and with the convenience and location of the resort, it‘s makes it even more attractive to be a part of a total lifestyle complex.”

From the General Manager

Gerald Depka, the complex General Manager comments, “The keys to success for the “Recreational Complex” will be our ability to provide services and products comparable with the best facilities in the southeast and nationally. A retail shop will provide sport specific products, equipment and apparel that are not readily available in retail stores in Western North Carolina. We‘re designing the complex to facilitate advanced sport specific training including tennis & golf academies, camps, clinics, individual instruction and coaches‘ and players‘ symposiums. We will be able to accommodate recreational use such as member play, exhibition matches, tournaments, leagues, special events and member parties. This fall and winter, we will be offering clinics, lessons, and contract court times for indoor tennis courts.”
